Famous for Buddhist religious sites and pristine natural landscapes, the picturesque town of Kandy in central Sri Lanka is set on a plateau surrounded by mountains. The city is best known for the Temple of the Tooth, where the tooth relic of Lord Buddha is said to reside. During the festival of Esala Perahera, one of the inner caskets of the tooth relic of Lord Buddha is taken for a procession around the city on a royal elephant, followed by dancers, drummers, flag and torch bearers, all decked up in their traditional costumes.
